Important legal disclaimer: This is an educational estimate, not legal or medical proof of fitness to drive. Actual results vary with absorption, food, medication, health and testing method. In South Africa, the statutory threshold for ordinary drivers is 0.05 g per 100 ml of blood (and 0.24 mg per 1,000 ml of breath); professional drivers have a lower threshold. Never drive after drinking.

What is the legal driving limit in South Africa?

For ordinary drivers, the National Road Traffic Act sets a blood-alcohol threshold of 0.05 grams per 100 millilitres, with a lower 0.02 g per 100 ml threshold for professional drivers. A reading below a legal threshold is not a guarantee that driving is safe or lawful in every circumstance.

How long does alcohol take to clear?

Alcohol clearance varies substantially from person to person. This tool uses a simplified Widmark estimate and an average elimination rate of 0.015% BAC per hour for educational illustration only. Water, coffee and cold showers do not speed up alcohol elimination.
